A beautifully detailed pair of turn-of-the-century Chinese decorations, each featuring a carved soapstone disc set within an ornate bronze frame. The soapstone panels are delicately incised with birds, flowering branches, and vines. Each bird rendered uniquely, showcasing individual character and artistry. The bronze stands are finely cast, adding elegance and structure to the natural warmth of the stone.

Marked “China” on the base, these pieces were made for export, circa 1900.

Early Chinese Stone Relief Carvings on Custom Lucite Stands

A striking pair of early Chinese carved stone reliefs, each mounted on bespoke lucite stands with elegant beveled edges, created in the 1970s to showcase the carvings as sculptural works of art.

One relief depicts a crane, a revered symbol in Chinese culture associated with longevity, wisdom, and nobility. The second relief features a deer, traditionally representing prosperity, abundance and a long life. Both carvings exhibit the weathered surface and character expected of age, with beautifully softened details that enhance their visual appeal.

The stone reliefs themselves measure approximately 7 inches by 8 inches each and are presented on substantial custom lucite stands that elevate the carvings while allowing them to be appreciated from all angles. The clean, modern lucite contrasts beautifully with the ancient stone, creating a sophisticated presentation suitable for both traditional and contemporary interiors.

While the exact dating of the reliefs is unknown, they are believed to date to the 18th century or earlier based on their style, carving technique and surface characteristics. The lucite mounts were commissioned in the 1970s and feature finely executed beveled edges.
